ChatGPT Prompting Guide For High Schoolers:

The goal of this prompting guide is to get an output from GPT that is:

  • Accurate: Accuracy is extremely important especially with subjects pertaining to social studies and science.

    • Oftentimes with subjects like history Chat-GPT can hallucinate. That is, some of the output can be false or inaccurate information. So it is better to provide information in the prompt and specify that you want the answer based only off of the info that is provided.
  • Learn: With subjects like science and math it is important to know how to do problems and how the solution is achieved. The learning journey is often more important than the answer.

  • Cheap: Being high schoolers, it is important to use AI that is accessible and is not costly.

  • Concise: Oftentimes Chat-GPT gives lengthy and verbose outputs and sometimes simple and concise output is the best option.

Some Helpful Practices to Follow:

We have found the following useful:

  • Specify how many sentences, bullet points, or paragraphs you want

  • Simple Language Vs Complex Language: Specify if you want the wording of the output to be a bit more complex or simple

  • Provide context for the prompt (background information)

  • Use certain keywords that help GPT produce outputs that answer the question better.

    • Examples: Identify, Explain, Classify, etc.,
  • The prompt should have a mixture of instructions, context, input, and output in order to get a better output.

  • If you want to the output to be in a specific format provide and example or word your criteria well.

  • Specify the tone you want the output to be: Casual, Formal, Informal, Technical, Easy, etc.,

History + ELA:

  • When asking questions that pertain to social studies or history in general it is better to answer some of the 5 W’s to make sure that you are providing enough context.
    • Who: Who is the question about?
    • What: What do you want to know?
    • When: Specify the time period.
    • Where: Where is this taking place (History)
    • Why: Reasoning, why is it important?
  • History: It is better to specify that you want the question to be answered with only the information you provided so that it’s more accurate.

Math + Science:

  • When prompting Chat-GPT to help you understand math or solve a problem it is best to implement Role Prompting

    • Role Prompting: Can ask ChatGPT to act as a tutor and explain problems and solutions.
  • Oftentimes the first answer might be wrong and the second time it may be correct. There’s also mistakes when it comes to rounding.

  • Provide your own formulas you would like it to follow or a method.

  • Sometimes the answers might be incorrect because of how the prompt is worded. so, make sure to word it well.
